Frequently Asked Questions

What is Goodwill?
Goodwill is a business that helps people with disabilities and other barriers to independence to get and keep jobs. Goodwill believes it is important to help people learn what they can do instead of emphasizing what they can't.

What is a disability?
A disability is any condition that significantly affects a person's ability to function in a major life area-- like walking, talking, seeing, hearing or learning. The person's disability may not mean that they can't do one of these things, but they many need assistance or have to do it in a different way.

Why do people come to Goodwill?
Sometimes when a person has a disability or other barrier, they need extra help in preparing to work, getting a job, or finding a job. Goodwill provides that assistance.

Why does Goodwill have stores?
The stores help Goodwill earn money to cover the costs of its programs and services. Goodwill stores also provide sites for people with disabilities and other barriers to train and work. Another benefit of the stores is that they provide an outlet for the sale of recycled goods. That keeps tons of useable items out of community landfills each year.

Why is it important for people to have jobs?
A job not only provides an individual with money for living expenses, but it also promotes independence and self esteem. People feel better about themselves when they realize they can be independent and make choices in their lives.

What sort of job might a person get after working with Goodwill?
The answer is as varied as the people served by Goodwill. Each person who uses Goodwill services will make career choices based on his or her interests and abilities. Since Goodwill offers training in office and bookkeeping skills, warehouse and recycling operations, janitorial work and retailing, the individual might choose to work in a restaurant, a grocery store, an office, or a factory. The choices are unlimited.
